Ozone: Your Lung Protection Guide
Houstonians can learn how to protect their lung and heart health through a new four-page guide, Ozone: Your Lung Protection Guide. You can download this helpful guide (PDF, 118K) from St. Luke’s pulmonary care department. For daily ozone and weather updates, call the Weatherline Forecast Service: 713-529-4444.
Knowing the Symptoms
When you're exerting yourself outside and 'bad' ozone levels are too high, you may experience symptoms such as throat irritation, shortness of breath, or chest pain. It's important to recognize these symptoms in yourself and members of your family because they may mean you should exercise in an air-conditioned environment or schedule your outdoor exercise before 11 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
'Bad' Ozone and Heart Patients
Recent findings suggest that 'bad' ozone may impact more than your lungs. People with heart conditions, such as heart failure, need to be especially vigilant when 'bad' ozone reaches high levels.
What Can You Do?
There are steps every Houstonian can take to help reduce 'bad' ozone.
- Keep your automobile maintained to keep exhaust levels low
-
Refuel your vehicle between the hours of 6 p.m. and 3 a.m.
-
Don't top off your tank when you refuel and limit engine idling
-
Mow your lawn in the late afternoon or early-mid evening
-
Particiapte in commuter transportation programs
Information on 'Bad' Ozone
An ozone warning means that high levels of ‘bad’ ozone have been measured at one or more monitoring sites in the area. The warnings developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicate air quality condition based on the levels of 'bad' ozone.
